Graça and Mouraria
Come and visit the most traditional neighborhoods of the city of Lisbon.
In Graça, the Portuguese troops commanded by D. Afonso Henriques in the conquest of the city settled for the siege of Lisbon. This neighborhood received the name of “Graça” in 1305, when all the convents of St. Augustine became also the invocation of Our Lady of Grace, it began by being noble, then bourgeois and merchants and later workers.
The district of Mouraria was born when D. Afonso Henriques sent the Moors, expelled from their citadel, to that place. There they preserved their customs: they practiced their religion, they spoke Arabic and they were governed by a governor.
