Príncipe Real, Chiado and Baixa
Come visit one of the most visited areas of the city of Lisbon.
Príncipe Real was at the beginning of the XV century, known as “Alto da Cotovia”. This formerly rural zone of the city will become in the XIX century the neighborhood of the upper bourgeoisie of the city and in the XX century, the dandy, trendy neighborhood, where bars, restaurants and antique shops are frequented by artists, politicians and journalists. Chiado will become, after the earthquake of 1755, the chic place of the city, to stroll, shop and go to cafes. The Baixa, known as Baixa Pombalina, is one of the most important areas of the city. The site most affected by the earthquake, will be built with a completely innovative project for the time. The anti-seismic structure, together with new squares, where the Terreiro do Paço and Rossio, wide streets stand out, will make this central part of the city one of the most modern in the world.
