Estrela and Lapa

Come visit some of the most pleasant districts of Lisbon.

Duration: 3h

In 1760, the Crown Princess Maria Francisca, the future Queen Maria I, vowed on the day of her marriage that if she had a first born son, who was born in 1761, she would build a convent and Basilica, one of the largest religious buildings of the time, in a place called Estrela. At the same time, after the earthquake of 1755, the aristocracy and high bourgeoisie, seeing the slowness of the reconstruction of the center of the city, quickly installed itself on the hill known as Lapa. For this reason, Estrela and Lapa will be until today two neighborhoods known as the most exclusive in the city, where, for example, some embassies are located.
