In 1755 took place one of the biggest earthquake of the European history in one of its most flourishing cities: Lisbon. Voltaire immortalized it in his famous play “Candide” and in his “Poème sur le désastre de Lisbonne”. Lisbon was never the same. Sebastião de Carvalho e Melo (Marquis of Pombal) and his architects, in a great effort that involved the whole society, decided to restore the glory of the Empire’s capital and to make it again one of the most modern cities of its time.
